From 31 October 2026 to 6 January 2027, Cantine Vite Colte in Barolo hosts parolasuonoimmagine (wordsoundimage), an exhibition devoted to Carla Bertola, an artist who placed writing at the heart of a practice bringing together poetry, sign, sound, gesture and installation.
The exhibition begins with the artist's deep bond with the land. As a child, in the Langhe and in Castellamonte, Bertola recorded the names of herbs and plants in a tiny notebook she had made herself. That habit soon became a poetic practice: a spare, essential and sorrowful writing, attentive to the hardship of living and ready to expose, with irony, the shallowness of social respectability.
When her work moved towards visual research, her attention to natural forms remained constant, as shown by the THE QUEST project, the frottages created at Vellano Arte and the series Alphabet birth and life, where calligraphy and signs from nature intertwine. A recurring element is coloured wool thread, used to "sew" graphemes onto paper and canvas, to build outdoor installations and to cross the space of her performances. Her youthful, ironically recalled experience of embroidery also gave rise to the long series of frange d'interferenza (interference fringes).
Artist's books, book-objects and handmade papers complete the portrait of a complex body of work in which the word always remains the original driving force.
